Publication Date: September 24 2021

Key Points

  • Total asset values of the Irish pension fund sector grew by 1.5 per cent over Q2-2021 to stand at €128.7 billion. Increases in investment fund shares (€1.5 billion) and pension fund reserves (€1.4 billion) accounted for the majority of asset growth. This growth was partially offset by a fall in holdings of currency & deposits (€0.8 billion) and debt securities (€0.2 billion). Pension fund reserves continue to be the largest asset holding of Irish pension funds, standing at €51.7 billion. [1]
  • The share of holdings allocated to pension fund reserves varies by the total asset size of pension funds. Pension funds with greater than €1 billion in total assets (12.3%) hold a lower proportion compared to pension funds with between €100 million and €200 million in total assets (61.1%).
  • Direct holdings of equities stood at €3.74 billion at end-Q2 2021. The primary issuer country for equity investments was the United States (50.4%), while equity issued in Europe (excluding Ireland and the UK) accounted for 20.1% of holdings. This was followed by Ireland (7.9%), the UK (6.9%) and Japan (6.1%).
